Space required to transport 60 people - car v. bus v. bicycle. Upcycled via acrossthepuddle:
The number of bike-commuters here is pretty incredible. If I happen to be in transit during 5pm-6pm, the bike lines will get backed up at least 10 deep at stop lights. I love it.
And I think, why can’t NYC do this? Because I’d say 1 in 5 commuters is riding a Barclays bike, these rent-able, city-provided, chunky, bikes:
They have the same sort of thing in DC, but not NYC. But I know why. It’s because NYC’s roads are nowhere near as conducive to biking as London’s. Bike lanes are relatively scarce compared to London, where not only are there bike lanes, there are sometimes medians between the bikes and the cars. Not to mention, cars DONT drive in the bus lane, which essentially is a bus-and-bike lane. It’s wonderful. And safe. And eco-friendly.
